Messiah: Origins by Matt Dorff, Mark Arey, and Kai Carpenter, is a really solid addition to the growing library of graphic novelizations of scripture (alongside this teams previous work, The Book Of Revelation, and The Action Bible).
Like any good origin, the authors take us back to the beginning… in this case the very beginning with a presentation of the introduction of “The Word Made Flesh” from John 1. I wasn’t expecting this setup, but I thought that it was very tastefully done and served as a nice intro to the thoughtful pages that were to come.
Even though Messiah: Origins is primarily about Jesus, I like the fact that the authors didn’t gloss over the secondary characters and plot arcs. Rather than just mentioning the birth of John the Baptist, I really liked the treatment that they gave “Zacharias’s Song”! The images behind the text depict the Old Testament realities these songs are describing and drew out some of the history the Jews of the time might have been picturing as they heard Zacharias’s words (as they also tastefully did with “Mary’s Song”).
